Anyone who's been around the Apps Team very long has likely heard me say "we don't do infrastructure", but may not know what I mean.

Reversing the statement may help:  "we build features customers will pay for."

Of course we know that in the real world all enterprise-class systems have some amount of "infrastructure"; that unseen plumbing that makes systems reliable, maintainable, etc, etc.  We have infrastructure also.  The real differences are:

• We never add infrastructure without (a) an immediate customer need or (b) an unavoidable circumstance (e.g. monitoring of a critical remote system, without which we wouldn't know the system is operational).
• We always consider buy and borrow options before we build any infrastructure.
• We never over-invest in infrastructure.  Put another way, we add the absolute minimum amount of infrastructure to address the need.
• Lastly, when we do add infrastructure we seek ways to raise the visibility of that infrastructure to the customer level.  As an example, adding user services (which most apps have) to the BSG Platform could be seen as infrastructure, but adding single sign-on and shared profile are tangible features that customers benefit from.
